Eugenia/Lake Eugenia

Eugenia is a small community located 5 minutes from the Village of Flesherton, 7 minutes to the Beaver Valley and 30 minutes to Collingwood. Although small in size this bustling community has a lot to offer including Lake Eugenia with public boat launch and public beach area, Eugenia Falls and the Bruce Trail. Eugenia has become a tourist and cottage destination for many and includes many B&B’s, general stores, restaurants, churches, a public park and the ever popular Bruce Trail to hike.

Lake Eugenia, also known as “the hidden gem of Grey County” is located in the Village of Eugenia and is a popular cottage destination to approximately 400 cottagers. The lake has had a fantastic new dock installed at the public boat launch which has free access to local residents. A fee is applicable for non-residents. Lake Eugenia is the largest inland lake in South Grey County. Lake Eugenia does not have boating restrictions which makes it a popular place for jet skiing, wakeboarding, tubing etc. yet also has many ideal spots for fishing, kayaking and canoeing. A public beach is next to the boat launch and is a great place to cool down on a hot summer day.

In 1914 the river was dammed and Lake Eugenia was essentially created, a generating station was built and hydro was supplied to the entire region. After many changes including a new damn built in 1962, the control of the Eugenia Station was transferred in 1999 from Ontario Hydro to Ontario Power Generation. Hydro is still being created to this day.

Eugenia falls which is tucked in on the west side of the Village is Grey County’s tallest waterfall and plunges 30 meters. The falls once supported 5 mills and was the site of Ontario’s second hydro-electric plant. This is where the gold rush took place and although the “gold” turned out to be iron pyrite better known as fools gold, the falls are a treasure all on their own and worth stopping to take a peak.

Every year Eugenia hosts “Gold Rush Days” a weekend festival featuring food , fun and games, a catered dinner and family dance, in memory of the false gold rush of 1852. Eugenia is a fabulous place for full time living or a weekend getaway for skiing, boating, hiking and biking. With scenery that can’t be beat this is a wonderful place to call home!
